News from the Farm

May 22, 2009

Summer is almost here!  We are so excited for school to let out so that the farm (and our lives) can once again be swarmed with young people and activities.

This is a great time to visit the farm.  We had another calf born just this morning (May 22) and received our second batch of chicks on Wednesday.  The place is just bursting with new life!  The plants and vegetables that we planted a month or more ago are almost ready to be harvested for you.

We will begin the CSA the first week of June.  Between now and then, we will be calling you to confirm your pick-up day.  You will be picking up your produce on the same day of the week through-out the CSA season.  If, for some reason, you are unable to pick up your produce on your day, please call, so that we can accommodate your schedule.

This has been a busy time of year.  In addition to all the planting and weeding, the newborn chicks and calves, and the start of hay season, we gave a few presentations for the farm.  Our favorite one was for our daughter’s Kindergarten class.  The children really enjoyed planting cucumber seeds, holding 3 week old chicks, and letting a calf suck their fingers.  I think we had just as much fun as they did!

For those of you who will be new to the CSA this year, we start out slow.  You will be receiving greens, such as lettuce and spinach and spring onions.  Then we start adding more things.  Sugar peas, radishes, and strawberries (Yes!  The frost missed the strawberries so we will have some for you!) will be added within the next several weeks.  Then, we keep adding more things until you hopefully get to the point of asking, ”How can I eat all this?!?”

We will be in touch soon, but as always, we welcome your calls and visits.

Blessings,

The Shaffers
